Many falsehoods, errors, misunderstandings and outright lies have accumulated about Charles Edward Conrad, as is usually the case with men of stature and accomplishment, whether out of jealousy, competition or just plain human passion. With this blog, I have taken this opportunity to begin the process of correcting those mistakes of the past and returning C. E. Conrad to his rightful place in Montana history. My late wife, Johanna (1956-2022) and I spent many years, researching the life of this fascinating man, research which continues today and for as long as I am breathing. The posts which will follow are the result of that research. It is hoped that some day, the full fruits of our labor will result in the publication of a new, more accurate and thorough biography to replace the flawed work that so poorly represents the true history of C. E. Conrad. He was a man of many talents and in the pages of this blog, we will explore his life and the events which helped make him what he was.
That flawed work is James Murphy's Half Interest in a Silver Dollar: The Saga of Charles E. Conrad (Missoula, MT: Mountain Press, [1988]). The next post will be a brief critical review of that book.
Until then.
